More Than Just Photos – Why I Enjoy Capturing Events Like This
As an event photographer in Cumbria, we recently had the pleasure of being commissioned to photograph the BECBC AGM, held at the fantastic North Lakes Hotel & Spa in Penrith. It was a brilliant event, bringing together businesses from across the region, and one that perfectly showcased the strength of the local network.
This particular event also carried an added level of responsibility. Some of the photographs were required for press use, meaning not only did the images need to be of a high professional standard, but they also needed to be delivered quickly and on time to meet publication deadlines. Getting the shot right in camera is crucial, but ensuring those images are edited and ready for press just as efficiently is equally important.
Our brief was to capture the key moments of the day, including professional images of the new Board, Directors, and members of the team. These are important photographs that help organisations present themselves professionally across their website, social media, and marketing materials. But as with many events, there is always more happening beyond the formal side.
Showcasing the Power of Networking Through Professional Event Photography in Cumbria
While covering the AGM, I took the opportunity to capture additional moments that really highlight what BECBC is all about… connection, collaboration, and conversation. From natural interactions between members to those genuine smiles during conversations, these candid moments tell the real story of the event. This is where event photography in Cumbria goes beyond staged images. It becomes about documenting the atmosphere and energy in the room. Those in-between moments often end up being the most powerful.
The Skill Behind Event Photography
Photographing live events is very different from other types of photography. No two situations are the same. Lighting can change in an instant. The number of people in a shot can vary. You might go from a one-to-one conversation to a large group photo within seconds. All of this requires quick thinking and constant adjustments to camera settings to ensure everyone is in focus and the image is well-exposed. It is about reacting, adapting, and anticipating moments before they happen.
During the event, I had several people ask about the equipment we use and how we capture these images. While the camera gear certainly helps, the real difference comes from experience. Knowing how to read a room, position yourself, and capture moments without interrupting them is something that comes with years of photographing events like this.
Capturing the Atmosphere
For me, being a professional event photographer in Cumbria is not just about taking photos of people. It is about capturing the full atmosphere of the event.
- The conversations.
- The interactions.
- The moments people do not even realise are being photographed.
Those candid shots where people only notice the camera at the last second often turn out to be the most authentic. They show the true character of the event and the people involved.
Why I Enjoy Event Photography Like This in Cumbria
What I enjoy most about photographing events like the BECBC AGM is seeing everything come together. The planning, the people, the energy in the room. But most importantly, it is seeing the reaction when clients receive their final images. That moment when they see their event brought to life again through photography makes it all worthwhile.
